Series - Barely Breathing Ballerina

The Day Before Surgery (Barely Breathing Ballerina - E2)

On this episode of Barely Breathing Ballerina, Bailey's life is chaotic. She is about to go into the hospital on Tuesday for three major surgeries, all follow-ups to the minor incidents she has been having all summer, mostly caused by her cystic fibrosis. Her anxiety about the surgery is amplified knowing that her family will also be under stress.

She has to get her house in order, make sure her parents, husband John, and daughters (Kage, age 12 and Follin age 9), are all set for the weeks she is going to be in the hospital and recovering. One of Bailey's strategies for getting the girls ready for her absence is to prepare several notes with clues so the girls have a sort of daily treasure hunt to look forward to each morning.

A professional hardship of being away for a surgery is missing time as the Artistic Director of Company 360. The groups is given a few weeks off but Bailey struggles with losing daily contact with her company. "I don't want anyone to feel like I am abandoning ship," she explains. "I get such pleasure and self-worth out of my work and having to pause it always makes me feel like I don't have an anchor anymore."

John also struggles with uncertainties of her surgery. "I guess you would call us pros at this. You would think we would be good at it by now but I never feel like I'm on top of it." There are weeks, sometimes months of recovery which the entire family has to adjust to… and it's never easy. By working together on planning and scheduling, there is less that Bailey has to worry about while she is lying on an operating table.

Bailey accepts that her recurrent health issues also put stress on their marriage. "There is so much guilt on my end, always," she reflects. "You want to get as much time with your partner before you're feeling poorly". Through it all Bailey seems have found the strength to work through it. "I just try to keep things as positive as possible."
