Amazing 2017 Stories: New Orleans High Schoolers Donate 210 Christmas Meal Boxes

For many, the end-of-year holidays are a time for relaxation and feasting, with plenty of home-cooked meals enjoyed among family and friends. For others, however, who have fallen on tough times or experienced a spat of bad luck, Thanksgiving and Christmastime can feel like a reminder of what they don't have, rather than what they do. Preventing those types of sad feelings around the holidays is the mission of Hams for Fams, a charitable organization in New Orleans, LA, whose founders and leadership team is rather unique.

Hams for Fams was started by a group of high school students. It wasn't an idea that they took from someone older and ran with, but rather a program entirely of their own making. Inspired by the experience of running out of supplies for needy families at their school's Thanksgiving food drive, a group of Jesuit High School students launched Hams for Fams three years ago.
During their first Christmas season, Hams for Fams delivered boxes of food to about 30 families. The second year, it was more than 100. And during this holiday, the students donated boxes to more than 210 needy households.

The program benefits both families in need of food, but also the students who participate (this year, hundreds of high schoolers and some college students helped out). "I feel very blessed that we were able to get some help," said Susan Sirois, who received a Hams for Fams box. The feeling is mutual, as volunteer Ben Brodnax explained: "It's a true blessing to be able to do this."
