Above And Beyond: HooplaHa Senior Citizen Of The Month
To continue our new series 'Above And Beyond' we bring you the first outstanding person in the senior citizen category; to be featured once a month. Comforting acts of kindness have become a regular gift from this 82-year-old woman. Elizabeth Laird has been given the title of 'Hug Lady' by greeting military men and woman who are either deploying or returning with a warming hug in Fort Hood, Texas. Her love for military started in 1950 when she enlisted in the Air Force. Even after her service, she continued to volunteer and give back. She became the 'Hug Lady' in 2003. Her open arm assembly is still in full operation. One soldier said 'she fills in for family when they can't be there.' It doesn't matter if it is in the middle of the night, a weekend, or on a holiday- she is there with open, loving arms. To show appreciation, military men and women have given her mementos and patches over the years. Recently, she was given the Yellow Rose Of Texas, awarded to women who make significant contributions to their community. She is an incredible and giving woman who understands the power of love and a hug. Keep on hugging, Elizabeth.
Stay tuned every week for stories about worthy people going above and beyond to make the world a better place.
