A Mother-Daughter Team Delivers Joy and Inspiration Across the Country, In Little Jars

"There's something about words that are so powerful, that can touch something inside of us, that can shift our perspectives." Those words, which are powerful themselves, are how Pam Robertson explains the rapid success of a simple idea that she and her daughter came up with, an idea that was inspired by their personal experiences with the emotional power of beautiful strings of words.

It was Pam who really initiated the whole idea. When she noticed that her daughter, Meredith, was going through a sad and isolated period during her middle school years following a fight with a friend, Pam put together a jar of inspirational quotations and left them in Meredith's room. Being a young teenager, Meredith initially ignored the quotations. But when she finally decided to tap into the emotional power contained within that jar, she knew that her mom had hit upon something really special.

With the knowledge of how much the quotations had lifted Meredith's spirits, the mother-daughter team decided that they wanted to spread that feeling to more young people in Meredith's school. They created a whole batch of jars, each filled with Meredith's 30 favorite quotations. Meredith started handing the jars out to her classmates, thinking they could all use some inspiration—but the jars became so much more!

Pam and Meredith started getting letters from all over the country, from cousins and friends of kids in Meredith's school who had heard about the jars and wanted some for themselves. And so "Meredith's Jars of Joy" was born. Today, the mother-daughter team sell and ship the jars all over the USA, and they donate a portion of their profits to a nonprofit called Family Promise (learn more here). In explaining the success of her mom's idea, Meredith emphasizes the power of positive thinking and hope: "If you read a quote and you want it to help you, I believe that it can."
