A Dog’s Journey Home (E10) – Prepping the Pittsburgh Puppies
How do you keep 62 dogs in a van happy and comfortable on a 1,600 mile journey? In this episode of A Dog's Journey Home, Scott Whyatt, co-founder of Tracy'sDogs, shares his secrets for caring for all of these pups as they set out for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where their new, loving families anxiously await their arrival.
Although the trip is well choreographed with his onboard team, including daughter Jenna, the effort to manage a group of this size is daunting. "It's always difficult when you have that many dogs, because your potty breaks are much longer, and there are more dogs you have to deal with for food and medications." Scott explains. "We're used to it. We've done two 60 dog transports this year. It delays things a little and we don't get where we need to go as quickly as we like to, but we love having 62 dogs on board."
On this trip there will be people from 11 different states ready to meet their new puppies, many of whom have had a long and difficult journey of rescue and recovery. One of the pups, Shalene, was kept alive by the shelter supervisor for months because she was so sweet until Tracy finally came and rescued her. Abbot had a hernia and was almost blind when Tracy arrived but the team helped her heal and found her a home with other dogs so that she would have a pack to follow and look out for her. And then there was Grace. When Tracy first took her out of her kennel to look her over, she gave her a paw and Tracy was smitten. Despite her size, the lack of space at the facility, and the cost of treating her Heartworm, Tracy insisted on taking her. "I just could not turn her away," Tracy remembered. "She has the most beautiful spirit inside and out and she is so deserving of this opportunity."
As it turned out, Grace's recovery and adoption later became the subject of the Tracy'sDogs Music Video, You Rescued Me, sung by Kris Jones. You can see the moment she was discovered in this episode and then watch the full story in the music video. (http://bit.ly/YouRescuedMeShare)
Pittsburgh is a particularly good market for the medium and large sized dogs who don't typically get adopted that quickly. Because of this, Scott considers it one of his best destinations and usually visits there twice a year. Now it's time to roll so buckle up and tune in – it's going to be a fun ride!
