A Birthday Boutique On Wheels Delivers Joy To Kids Living In Homelessness
"Every child deserves a happy birthday" is a statement that we can all surely agree with. It's also the mission statement for Beverly's Birthdays, a 6-year-old organization in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that's essentially a party on wheels for kids who need it most.
Megs Yunn is the founder of Beverly's Birthdays. Megs shared that the name of her business was inspired by an 11-year-old girl named Beverly whom Megs had met and spoke with while Beverly was experiencing homelessness, and who told Megs that she had never had a birthday party or eaten a slice of birthday cake.
"For me, it was one of those moments where I said, there are probably more Beverlys out there," Megs recalls thinking.
Beverly's Birthdays organizes cupcakes, food, and toys for parties at homeless shelters and recovery centers. And the icing on the cake? They also arrive with the Birthday Boutique, a former delivery truck that's been transformed into a clothing "store" where kids who are celebrating can choose free items.
"One of the humbling consequences of poverty is inadequate clothing," says Megs, based on her conversations with some of the families she works with. So the Birthday Boutique is "all about self-worth and self-esteem."
In 6 years, Beverly's Birthdays has brightened the days of more than 30,000 kids in the Pittsburgh area.Story via KDKA. For more inspiring stories, tune in for our original videos over on YouTube!
