In the face of disaster, it's nice to see people come together and help each other out. These are just 6 examples of people bringing back hope and humanity during Hurricane Harvey.


1) "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, Houston furniture store owner, has turned two of his stores into shelters and has organized volunteers and trucks to rescue fellow Texans from the wrath of Hurricane Harvey.

The Good That Comes With The Bad

Not only that, he's opened his mattress showroom to members of the Texas Army National Guard so they can get some rest.

2) People lined up to help rescue people and animals from the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

3) Facebook, Google, Amazon match $3 million worth of donations.

4) Texans with boats are patrolling neighborhoods around Houston and bringing residents stranded by flooding to safety.

5) Celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Sandra Bullock, Drake, Beyonce, Ellen DeGeneres, and Miranda Lambert (to name a few) have been donating money to support Houston in it's time of need.

6) This horse trapped in the rising flood water from Hurricane Harvey and these heroes decided to jump in to save her.

Non-Profit Matches Veterans with Therapy Dogs for Life Changing Support

Brett Simon was a veteran K9 police officer who went on to work as a contractor for the Department of the Army as a bomb dog handler. However, after serving two tours in Iraq, he returned home suffering from PTSD.

Led by his Mom, Shari Duval, who had worked for veteran's charities near their home in Jacksonville Florida, Brett's family undertook two years of research to find a solution to help Brett and others with this condition.

Their research focused on canine assistance for PTSD. Ultimately, they started a non-profit organization. K9s For Warriors, dedicated to providing service dogs to warriors suffering from post-traumatic stress and/or traumatic brain injury as a result of their military service (post 9/11).

Dance Gave Her Love, a Community, and an Identity

At 2 1/2 years old, Shaina Schwartz and her Mom went to see the Nutcracker. Even though this was the first time she had ever seen any kind of a dance performance, as soon as it was over she excitedly said, "Mommy, that's what I want to do!"

Her long road toward becoming a dancer and then an owner and founder of a dance company had its share of ups and downs.
