5th Grade Girls Show No Fear In Boy's Basketball League
Many sports leagues are separated by gender; the boys against the boys- the girls against the girls. But the girls on The Xpress don't follow those standards. They are one of the few girl's basketball teams in a boy's league. The Xpress basketball team is 8-2 in their intramural league based in Springfield, Illinois, with a team of nine girls who are 10 and 11 years old. The team plays under the direction of coach Tariq Toran, who is an assistant coach for a local Division III men's college team and previously served as an assistant for a semi-pro men's basketball team. Toran says "I just wanted to teach them the right way to play basketball.. not the separation from girls versus boys." These girls show no fear and prove they just want to play the game they love - whether it be against girls or boys.
